In case i didn't mention before you're probably better off not lookin at these full screen. My sketchpad is tiny and my goofy hands aren't great at being neat.

Computer's startin to make funny noises now aswell, when it's opening the bigger files, not sounding too healthy .... as a result some more doodles to make the time pass quicker.. For the top one I thought it'd be cooler to keep attention on the female assassin so left the crowd and target shapes undefined. Second one's ridiculous.

I'm pickin away at a book cover, hopefully have a couple of presentable pieces for the beautiful Norwegian author this week sometime. In the meantime a doodle while I was waiting for huge photoshop files to open earlier on my tiny little computer at work. Didn't think much about it, found a cool pic of a gun and copied it.

prickin around after dinner this evenin listenin to 'off the ball', crackin show. I just blocked in a few colours. When I have time I might prick around a bit more. Dunno though McDevitt's face maybe should be rounder don't know if Murph's face is matchin the voice either. Still somethin' different, my caricaturin' is brutally rusty. Still the blog needed a post, it's been nearly a month.

sunday night itouch pic (back to the sketchbook app - brushes pixelates when you zoom in, makes it a pain in the arse). i came across a photo, a downshot of an umbrella in the rain with just the feet underneath, and kind of combined that with a memory of a pic nathan fowkes did for a project of aa dude steppin off a plane at some for of alien testing facility. Anyways it's not as good as either of the two reference pieces, but I'm improvin slowly with the new technology. takin a break from it for a while now, plenty of work to do. I started this at around nine thirty and it's almost 3 in the mornin now, shite! I dumped the video pic from friday and the the pic of the dude and the umbrella from a couple of weeks ago, look shite now.

Dinnertime doodling. I was listening to a Jimmy Stewart series of old radio plays durin the day while workin and hunted up a pic of Donna Reed to test the 'brushes' app on the itouch. I think I prefer the sketchbook app. Just a couple of niggly things, but the main one would be that there doesn't seem to be a way to scale up or down a layer/image (did a google trawl and went through the help menu). Like it's just a quick sketch, but when you zoom in and shit and you get lost in a detail, like an eye, and you go a bit bigger than the sketch underneath, it'd be handy to scale up and down a bit. I could have fit all her hair in then. Maybe they'll have this feature for the ipad version, but an ipad ain't on my shoppin list, cintiq and itouch is plenty. Great brushes on the app though. Anyway back to work.

Another itouch pic, bit cleaner than the last one. Cool bein able to prick around on the thing when sleep isn't comin easy. Her ear is a bit big but this is intentional to highlight the skull earring! ha ha, not really! Beannachtaí Lá Fhéile Phadraig do chuile! Beagánín déanach mar is ghnáth dom!
-i adjusted the forehead as per JG O Donoghue's comment to make it less of a feature. Hope it works better. I don't know how to select and scale, but I think it makes the brow a bit less imposing hopefully. Cheers for the comments as always.

A really quick one today, really busy. From the BBC series of the rescue effort heading out onto the Mediterraenean following the Ethiopian airlines crash. Also wanted to congratulate my brother and his wife after adding Luke Galvin into the mix yesterday evening. Good times ahead.

I sketched this out on Saturday evening, just took a half hour break to finish it off. Bit annoying though, I couldn't find the ref photo again on the web. A cheat aswell, I used some tip-ex/white-out because of the colour of the page, it wasn't exactly the plan when I started out the other night.

From the BBC 'day in pictures' again. A soldier rooting through rubble in Haiti. Cheers for all the comments on these, really appreciate them.

Friday, January 22, 2010

A sketch from a photo from the bbc website again. I stayed up till three last night prickin around with it. Great photos on that website. It's of security forces in Kabul after several bombings in the city.

Thursday, January 21, 2010

sketch from a photo on the bbc website - it's a Black-Shouldered Kite apparently, a cool photo, they post great 'in pictures' series on the site, really great stuff.

A before bedtime sketch..I've no money to donate so here's my salute to the UN, working under the most extreme conditions in Haiti, along with NGOs and other foreign aid agencies.

Very out of practice, meant to be the Bruce Dern character from the Burbs, just a doodle anyways. From the part of the movie when he runs out onto the street half shaven. One of his many great lines in the movie below...

"Listen up, mister. That piece-of-scum barking rat of yours has just taken his last dump on my lawn. I find one more, just one, I'm gonna catch him and staple his ass shut."

edit: lunchtime update - I added a battered Ray.

Really quick memory sketch from the news after dinner. I tried to put in as little detail as possible, with bugger all strokes, I think it's readable, hopefully??? If you squint maybe? Fun anyway. Time for a pint.

Wednesday, January 06, 2010

After a hard days' work Coco asleep. Just wanted to see if I could see the colours if I squinted. So if you're lookin at this you should probably squint to get the effect, and pretend it's right behind you, so look at it turn away from it aqnd so on, my cintiq's facing the other way! One flat brush, one layer on ps underneath a really ruff sketch on multiply.
